MARCH 2009
COMMODORE'S CORNER
How things have changed……..
In the 70’s, if I was on a plane, it was probably Friday and we were off to another regatta somewhere in the world. Remember the 70’s? And the airports? You were dropped at the curb, duffel bag in hand, you ran down the concourse and just as they were closing the gate, you whizzed by the attendant, handing over your ticket, and announcing you were right on time.
Try to do that these days? Last March, I was invited to race in a similar event from San Diego to Cabo San Lucas. On the appointed day, Carole performed her “dump the chump” duty at the airport, but instead of “whizzing by the attendant”, I spent a whole hour going through security. (I think I’m on the “no fly list”.)
Finally, I arrived at the Duke’s California airport and hailed a cab to be taken to the Balboa Yacht Club. The turbaned driver asked me where it was. Unfortunately, I couldn’t help—things sure looked different than the last time I was there over 20 years ago.
Making it to the club, I couldn't help remember this was where we used to hunt Easter eggs as children. I walked down the docks to find my ride, a classic 50 year old Calkins 50. It was easy to spot as it was the only wooden boat and had a mast about half as high as the rest. I had to climb up the pointed stern rather than step on a 20’ wide swim platform.
Then old home week started. There were faces and people I had not raced with (or even seen) for over 20 years. Wow! Were THEY a lot older!
Then the stories (lies?) started, the beers flowed, and it seemed just like old times again. Ha! Maybe there are still some things that never change.
The race?
Well, that’s another story.
